we're starting out with patchy dense fog around the bay area. watch out for that. some of the visibilities less than a quarter mile near the coastline and some of the intier yar valleys. we are going to see clouds rolling in. much colder temperatures starting late this evening of and into tomorrow. in the meantime, out over the bay, you can see patchy, dense fog out there, just a thin layer but boy, you get caught in that it's very thick. 42 concord. 41 oakland. 48 san francisco. 44 san jose. this afternoon temperatures in the 60s. this is the last time you see 60s until next weekend or longer. let's check your "kcbs traffic" with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. we have a few minor fender- benders out there but nothing huge to slow you down. there is fog on the roads. this accident is now gone. all lanes are back open. this was in d.c. northbound 280 by hickey boulevard. still a little bit of slowing in the area though. there may be some activity off to the right-hand shoulder.

if you are doing any traveling along the peninsula right now, maybe dropping off picking up over by sfo this is what it looks like near third and it continues to move well into san bruno. check of the east bay now 880 so far, so good. and still bart and all mass transit on time. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. new this morning, two earthquakes were felt in the gilroy area overnight. the second was 3.7. both centered about four miles south, southeast of gilroy. no reports of damage or injuries. the holiday shipping season is officially on. right now delivery workers are gearing up for their busiest day of the year. cbs 5 reporter mark kelly joins us now from a fedex facility in san francisco that could see more packages than ever. >> reporter: michelle, the companies that study this sort of thing say this holiday season is going to be bigger

and better than ever. in fact, fedex predicts today will be the busiest shipping in its history moving 22 million boxes in a single day. now, compare that to its second busiest day so far. 19.9million boxes. that was last year on december 17th. that's a big increase from just last year. so what's driving all this? the company is pointing to all that online shopping that folks are doing these days. remember, today is cyber monday. fedex says talking worldwide, online shopping is three to four times the rate of traditional store shopping. of course, someone has to ship all those online purchases and that's where fedex is seeing these record numbers coming in. here's some more positive economic news. a company called emarketer crunched the numbers for online shopping and they predict that online sales during the holidays are going to continue

to jump 15 times year after year, live in san francisco, telling kehl kpix 5. >> the national retail -- mark kelly, kpix 5. >> the national retail federation says holiday sales could hit $602 billion this year. thousands of commuters are taking buses around the scene of a train derailment in new york city over the weekend. investigators worked through the night to clear the tracks to be sure no other victims were left in the wreckage. four passengers killed yesterday morning when the train just ran off the tracks on a sweeping curve in the bronx. >> they will know the speed the train was traveling. they will also know if the engineer was attempting to apply the brakes or not. they will also know if the brakes were working. >> some of the passengers said the train seemed to be going a lot faster than usual right before the crash. a freight train derailed in the same area in the summer in july. investigators will be looking for possible connections between the two accidents. new this morning, automation in the cockpit is

coming under scrutiny by federal safety experts. the ntsb plans a two-day hearing next week on the deadly asiana airline crash at sfo in july. that plane came in too low and too slow as it approached while on automatic pilot. safety experts are war worried pilots relied too much on automation and would have trouble taking over in an emergency. a toddler trapped under water for more than 10 minutes doing miraculously well this morning. this little boy fell into this murky green pond in vallejo when fishing with his grandmother on saturday. she jumped in after him but couldn't find him. she called 911 and firefighter dean strohmeyer found the boy in a -- diane strohmeyer found the boy in a drainage pipe. her partner performed cpr. 24 hours later news got back to the firehouse the boy is doing well. >> wow, it is the best early christmas present that all of us could possibly imagine. >> firefighters say the cold

water most likely saved the boy's life. the toddler's grandmother treated for hype therm is expected to recover. the santa rosa teen shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy may have a memorial park created in his honor. sonoma county lawmakers will meet tomorrow to discuss requests from the community. a deputy shot 13-year-old andy lopez in october because he mistook the teen's bb gun for an ak-47 assault rifle. tonight an east bay school district will hold a meeting to address policies on bullying and harassment after a fight at hercules high school ended up on youtube. it shows three female students attacking a fourth punching and hair pulling. one of the those involved is identifies as transgender. tonight's meeting happens at 6:30 at the [ non-english language ] middle school in richmond. it looks like bart's two biggest unions will sue the transit agency over their contract dispute. the "san francisco examiner" reports a union official said they are working out the

details and a suit could be filed this week. the issue is the tentative contract that union members approved in october. bart directors also approved it. but first, they removed a family leave provision. >> state lawmakers starting the day off with a raise. an independent p.m. panel approved the 5.3% bump over the summer. it's meant to restore part of the paycuts made during the recession. lawmakers will earn about an extra 5 grand a year. >> that's after we took a 23% cut in the last few years appropriately by an independent commission, we don't get to do this. >> about a dozen lawmakers plan to turn it down. no bay area lawmakers are on the list. even before this raise, though, california lawmakers were the highest paid in the nation but they don't receive pensions. the white house's self- imposed deadline has passed for the healthcare website to start working. reporter susan mcginnis has a check-up on the site that's become a political sore spot for the obama administration. >> reporter: the white house

says 50,000 people can now log on to healthcare.gov all at the same time. >> we have a much more stable system that's reliably open for business. >> reporter: jeffrey, who leads the president's website repair team, said in a conference call this weekend that after more than 400 bump fixes and software -- bug fixes and software upgrades, the obama administration met its goal a working site for the vast majority of users. >> the site is stable and operating at intended capacity with greatly improved performance. >> reporter: response times have improved from 8 seconds in late october to less than 1 second. error rates have gone from 6% to less than 1%. democrats applaud the progress. >> hopefully we are going to have americans get access to the healthcare they need. >> reporter: republicans argue once consumers get in, they won't like what they see. >> most americans are going to find a less dynamic health system. they are going to find that the cost of the healthcare that they must purchase is going to

ls right no syria cyber monday is what's trending -- cyber monday is what's trending today. it's the biggest online shopping day of the year. kiet do is in san jose checking all the deals online. did you find anything, kiet? >> reporter: yeah. god, all the emails started rolling in right at the start of midnight here, just deal after deal. so according to some people, a lot of us will be spending on average about 4 hours at work shopping online. and i bet you a big chunk of it will be today. on this cyber monday, sure, there are good deals, but how do you know they're great deals? online databases like savings.com and pricegrabber.com claim to do all the heavy lifting by pulling coupons and deals from multiple online retailers. >> take advantage of deal sites as well as online databases that congregate or help collect all that information in one place. so it really takes the hard work out of it for you. >> reporter: cyber monday has now grown into a cyber tuesday,

wednesday and so on. its more like a cyber week that's now worth about $1 billion. a mommy shopping blogger says she noticed another trend that hits about mid-december. >> around december 15, a lot of discounts on jewelry, handbags, other apparel items, and they are trying to clear their extra inventory and they know that us as consumers are looking to go out and buy all these holiday gifts. >> and that times out well with annual free shipping day which happens on december 18. we're live in san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. well, $20,000 for a 1999 lexus may seem a bit outrageous. but a san diego man thinks it's nothing to own a piece of actor leonardo dicaprio. this is a picture of the famous actor with the car back in 2000. the current owner is auctioning the car on ebay now. he says he has paperwork listing the titanic owner as

[ laughter ] let's go out live towards the bay bridge. they just issued a dense fog advisory for the eastern edge of the span. it's thick through the macarthur maze towards the toll plaza. it sounds like it gets better once you get into san francisco. all right. southbound 680 approaching stone valley road this was an accident involving a deer. the deer was in the number one lane. it is already cleared. it's out of there. but we're actually seeing a number of fender-benders involving deer. it's one of several we have seen. mass transit so far everything is on time. bart has more than 20 trains all reporting no delays. ace train one and three also good, ferries, caltrain, everything pretty much on schedule. here's a live look at the

nimitz freeway 880 in oakland -- rather, this is 580. westbound 580 looks good towards the dublin interchange. no delays through the altamont pass. silicon valley commute westbound 237, no problems leaving milpitas heading towards sunnyvale. that is your "kcbs traffic. >> some of the visibilities less than a quarter mile so be careful if you are traveling but we have major changes on the way. clouds to the north that's a weak cold front sliding in our direction but that's going to usher in some big time changes. some much colder air heading our direction maybe hard freezes overnight. we have patchy, dense fog this morning. chilly temperatures early on in the valleys. by the afternoon partly cloudy, hazy sunshine, and then some more clouds come our way and much colder weather toward the next few days. high pressure holding on for one last day and this cold air already creeping into far northern california plunging into the bay area later on this

evening and into tomorrow. temperature-wise still some 60s into the central valley. showers to the north only 53 degrees in eureka and 64 with some showers into redding. computer models showing some clouds beginning to work their way toward the bay area and then toward the evening hours, that will start to thicken it up t yeah, we have some of that cold air coming in our direction. the temperatures will stay cool. 66 san jose. 62 in pacifica. numbers in the east bay well into the 60s and then inside the bay you will see 60s, as well. so the next couple of days changes in the works much colder air coming our way slight chance of showers but i think the big story will be the coal temperatures not only tomorrow but well into the next weekend. yeah, it's going to feel like the season. finally after those temperatures in the 70s. >> you already gave me the goose bumps. >> better get out the warm weather gear. >> we won't see 60 until april. >> probably not. >> thanks, lawrence. >> all right. >> great news. a giant female panda cub at the national zoo now has a

name. a vote by the public has chosen the name bow-bowiebow. the announcement came yesterday as the cub turned 100 days old. next time you see a mountain lion, wildlife officers will be have to be nicer. the law requires them to use nonlethal methods to deal with the animals as long as they are not an immediate threat to people. >> it was safer to kill it in the past. >> a year ago fish & game shot and killed two orphan cougar cubs under a deck. at the time that was the policy. the new law gives officers a little more flexibility to tranquilize, capture and relocator rant lions. 5:19. the national anthem touched one broncos player on sunday but

morning, a man is dead and e people are being questionedy police after an altercation outs developing in kansas city this morning, a man is dead and three people being questioned by police after an altercation outside the chiefs stadium. the incident happened in the parking lot outside arrowhead yesterday. police say the man who died was found inside someone else's car leading to a struggle with the owner. right now, it's not exactly clear how he died. so no charges have been filed. good morning, everybody. it's december 2nd. the bcs rankings are out. florida state is number one. stanford is moved up to number seven. they are going to play arizona state for the right to go to the rose bowl. nfl, rams and 49ers

up. >> hi, everyone. good morning. it is cyber monday. december 2, good to have you with us. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is just about 5:30. let's get a look at traffic and weather. but first, let's check in with lawrence. >> yes. some patchy, dense fog developing around the bay area along the coastline in some of the valleys now. some of the visibilities less than a quarter of a mile. so if you are headed out the door, be careful early on. throughout the day the fog will lift but we have some more clouds coming in our direction and there's even a slight chance we could see some showers into tomorrow. i think more importantly, though, it's going to usher in some much colder air sliding into the bay area. so that coming in later on this evening and into tomorrow. right now, though, out the door we have some patchy, dense fog and those temperatures in the 30s and the 50s around much of the bay area. down to 34 degrees and some fog in santa rosa. 48 in san francisco. this afternoon mild temperatures, a lot of 60s popping up, especially into the south bay and into the east bay. and then in the north bay maybe a little cooler some of the clouds beginning to filter in about 64 degrees in san

francisco. let's check your "kcbs traffic" with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. and the fog is so thick as lawrence mentioned on the eastern end of the bay bridge, chp went ahead and issued a dense fog advisory as you approach the bay bridge toll plaza, thick through the maze. on the western edge of the span, it is clear. so just a heads up. no metering lights yet so no big delays but they are building now through the altamont pass and the livermore valley and westbound 580. it's probably the slowest drive time now, it's about 18 minutes between the wind turbines and the dublin interchange. for milpitas commuters this is a live look for the silicon valley commute westbound 237 looks great all the way out towards sunnyvale. that is a check of your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you guys >> thank you. an online arrangement to sell a videogame system ended with murder in san francisco. the seller was robbed and shot to death yesterday afternoon in the bayview near bayshore

boulevard and jerrold avenue. the victims name is not released and no description of the killer. muni is reminding riders to keeper belongings and purses close over the holiday shopping season. the san francisco transit agency says robberies and cell phones snatchings are a big problem on the buses. muni wants people coming into the city to shop be aware of your surroundings. cops will patrol malls in fremont. teams of bicycle officers are cover areas throughout the city on the weekends until the end of the month. a little boy trapped under water for more than 10 minutes but as brian webb tells us the boy's age and the water itself may have helped save his life. reporter: it was a typical saturday afternoon at vallejo fire station 23 when a 911 call came in from one district over. but when a little boy is drowning, you don't worry about the address. >> i actually was working out in the gym so i was in a t- shirt and shorts.

>> reporter: a 2-year-old had fallen in this pond while fishing with his grandmother. she couldn't find him after searching for nearly 10 minutes. when diane arrived, she jumped in and spotted the boy in a drain pipe on her second dive. >> he actually had drifted underneath the road and was suspended so i saw the white t- shirt, grabbed him and stood on the bottom, raised my hands up and handed him off. >> like an overpass. >> reporter: this apprentice firefighter started chest compression and prayers. >> when it's a pediatric, it's an eerie feeling because you never know the outcome. >> reporter: the water right here is 5 feet deep and very cold. that along with the fact this boy is very young probably saved his life. >> incredibly cold which that gives the child a way better chance of having the least amount of deficits or making a full recovery. >> reporter: 24 hours later, word reached the crew the boy was doing better, so much he is

expected to make a full recovery. >> wow! it is the best early christmas present that all of us could possibly imagine. >> reporter: just another day on the job at fire station 23 saving lives along the way. brian webb, kpix 5. >> the toddler's grandmother was also treated for hypothermia. she will make a full recovery, as well. happening today the oakland teen who was set on fire on the ac transit bus will return to school finally. luke "sasha" fleischman is a senior at maybeck high school in berkeley. he returned home last week after being treated for second- and third-degree burns. police sat the attack on november 4 was partially motivated by homophobia. speed is the focus of the investigation into the crash that killed fast and furious actor paul walker and a friend in southern california. grieving fans are creating a memorial at the scene of saturday's crash in valencia.

the 40-year-old walker was a passenger in his friend's porsche when they slammed into a pole. a costar cried when he visited the crash site. [ crying ] >> gibson placed a single flower at the sited where fans have been holding -- at the site where fans have been holding vigils. universal pictures is not saying what it will do with "fast & furious" 7 due out next summer. new details on the helicopter crash in scotland. authorities found another body bringing the number of killed to nine. the police chopper crashed through the roof of a crowded pub in glasgow on friday night. three people died on board and six pub. there may be more victims in the rubble. this morning, thousands of commuters in new york city are riding buses now past a scene of a deadly train derailment in

the bronx. cbs correspondent marlie hall now with more. reporter: investigators worked through the night at the scene of a seven-car commuter train derailment that killed four and injured more than 60. >> that car you see in your screen now, that was tipped over on its side yesterday partially. it's uprighted . >> reporter: the investigation appears to center around how fast the train was moving as it reached a curve in the bronx just north of manhattan. a lawmakers tells cbs news the train's engineer, william rockefeller, jr., told rescuers he tried to apply the brakes but they weren't working. the ntsb recovered data recorders which should tell the story. >> they will know the speed that the train was traveling. they will also know if the engineer was attempting to apply the brakes or not. they will also know if the brakes were working. >> reporter: the train came to a stop just feet from where the hudson and harlem rivers meet. some passengers say they thought they were going to plunge into the water. >> i thought i'm going to die.

>> reporter: this passenger says people were tossed around like rag dolls. >> i can see some people flying from my left side to the right side. >> reporter: james lovell is among the dead. his 17-year-old son posted this message online: this feels like an awful nightmare that i can't wake up from. rest easy, dad. i love you. marlie hall for cbs news, the bronx, new york. >> that train carried about 150 passengers and was about half full when it derailed. a california couple's family is meeting with detectives today after the two vanished under mysterious circumstances. the two from sacramento went fishing on the delta thanksgiving afternoon. hours later, their boat was found empty still running and going around in circles. the coast guard and deputies searched but found no trace of the two. their family worries someone might have hurt them. >> it's just really nice people. they have no enemy, nothing like that. i'm still hoping that they

morning ahead of a new week of trading. wendy gillette of cbsmoneywatch.com is live at the new york stock exchange. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. today is of course cyber monday the biggest day of the year for online shopping. industry experts expect 131 million americans will shop online for deals today compared to 129 million last year. the national retail federation estimates a record 141 million americans went shopping over the four-day holiday weekend including black friday up from 137 million last year. but shoppers spent nearly 3% less the first time that spending has fallen since the group started tracking in 2006. experts say deep discounts took a toll on retail sales. wall street remains on a roll when its longest streak of weekly gains in a decade comes to the endof the holiday week. back to you guys. >> "60 minutes" did an
